School punishments by spanking girls and spanking boys in the 1960s:

1. Legal Status:

   • Corporal punishment in schools was legal in the UK during the 1960s.
   • It was widely accepted as a means of maintaining discipline in classrooms for girls as well as boys.
   • Teachers were permitted to administer physical punishment, often using implements like canes, slippers, or hands.

2. Gender Dynamics:

   • Girls were less likely than boys to receive corporal punishment, but it was still practiced in many schools, particularly in single-sex institutions.
   • When applied to girls, spanking or caning was typically administered by female staff, though male teachers might also be involved in some cases, especially in coeducational schools.

3. Methods:

   • Common methods included hand-spanking, caning on the hands or buttocks, or the use of a slipper (a plimsoll). In the classroom the punishment would usually be over a clothed bottom but when the punishment of boys or girl in private by a teacher, especially by the headmaster or headmistress would be a bare bottom spanking.
   • Girls were generally punished less harshly than boys, often due to societal norms regarding gender and perceived fragility.

4. Social Attitudes:

   • At the time, spanking as a form of corporal punishment was seen as a standard part of school discipline. Although it was used in most schools in was especially prevalent in catholic schools run by the Jesuit priests, Christian Brothers and convents run by nuns.
   • There was little public outcry against it until later decades, when shifting attitudes toward child welfare and rights began to emerge.

5. Decline of Practice:

   • By the 1970s and 1980s, opposition to corporal punishment grew, leading to its eventual abolition in state schools in England and Wales in 1987, and in private schools in the UK by 1999-2003.

While corporal punishment was normalized in that era, retrospective views often criticize it as harsh and potentially harmful, reflecting changing attitudes toward discipline and child welfare.

However many will argue that when boys and girls were subject to corporal punishment in schools, discipline was maintained  far much better than today and teachers were shown far more respect.

Today where detention is the main punishment in schools, it requires supervision and takes up a teacher's time,  caning on the other hand was quick taking only a minute but with pain lasting a lot longer than a detention and the after effects leaving the bottom sore including stripes lasting 7 to 14 days. In those days parents as well as children had greater respect for their teachers and if they told their parents what had happened then it was likely the boy or girl would receive a spanking from their mother or father.
